![]() When Jack finally takes up the cosmic rod, I was grinning like a jackass, even though I knew it was coming. ![]() He's more interested in his second hand store than being the protector of Opal City. He doesn't wear a costume, although the goggles and leather jacket become an identifier of sorts. ![]() Jack Knight is far from the typical superhero, of the 1990s or any other period. It looked like Tony Harris was finding his legs at time, some of it is a little overwritten, and some of the references are way out of date. It quickly became my favorite superhero comic of the time period, maybe of all time.īefore I start gushing about it, I'll get the warts out of the way. ![]() The original series was just wrapping up when I finally gave it a shot. I had a Batman and some issues of All-Star Squadron with the original Starman and I had a few issues of Adventure Comics with the Ditko Starman in it. To be honest, I didn't know all that much about Starman before I initially picked this up years ago. Unlike most comics, Starman was actually about something, about stepping into your father's shoes and seeing how they fit. ![]() Starman by James Robinson was on of those bright spots. There were variant covers, gimmick covers, stunt storylines out the ass, and everything was grim and gritty for the sake of being grim and gritty. When his brother is killed, Jack Knight is forced to take up his father's legacy, the legacy of Starman, and protect Opal City as best he can.Īs I've said in other places, the 1990s were a bleak time for superhero comics. ![]()

![]() ![]() There’s always a seductive pull to seeing Grimm tales made grimmer - or at least more in step with our modern sensibilities - but stripped of their richer descriptive powers in print, this Irish author’s fables seem like retro revisionism. ![]() ![]() The list of notable updates ranges wide, from cartoonist Jay Ward’s “Fractured” satires to “Into the Woods’ ” musical melancholy, Angela Carter’s darkly sexualized fictions and the NC-17 Little Red Rider in da ‘Hood cult pic “Freeway.” Likewise seeking to burrow deeper into bedtime stories is Emma Donoghue’s “Kissing the Witch,” a stage omnibus adapted from her acclaimed 1997 novel. ![]() The lingering impact that fairy tales have on us as children has made them increasingly popular for adult re-interpretation, given our era of fixation on formative years as both nostalgia-glazed “lost innocence” and explanatory key to grown-up woes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The deeper she delves into the history of Romeo and Giulietta, and the closer she gets to the treasure they allegedly left behind, the greater the danger surrounding her-superstitions, ancient hostilities, and personal vendettas. But six centuries have a way of catching up to the present, and Julie gradually begins to discover that here, in this ancient city, the past and present are hard to tell apart. Their ill-fated love turned medieval Siena upside-down and went on to inspire generations of poets and artists, the story reaching its pinnacle in Shakespeare's famous tragedy. In 1340, still reeling from the slaughter of her parents, Giulietta was smuggled into Siena, where she met a young man named Romeo. ![]() ![]() This key sends Julie on a journey that will change her life forever-a journey into the troubled past of her ancestor Giulietta Tolomei. The only thing Julie receives is a key-one carried by her mother on the day she herself died-to a safety-deposit box in Siena, Italy. But the shock goes even deeper when she learns that the woman who has been like a mother to her has left her entire estate to Julie's twin sister. Twenty-five-year-old Julie Jacobs is heartbroken over the death of her beloved aunt Rose. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now I live within a couple of hours of close to a dozen horse tracks - including Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Smith urged Howard to buy Seabiscuit for a bargain-basement price, then hired as his jockey Red Pollard, a failed boxer who was blind in one eye, half-crippled, and prone to quoting passages from Ralph Waldo Emerson. When he needed a trainer for his new racehorses, he hired Tom Smith, a mysterious mustang breaker from the Colorado plains. Three men changed Seabiscuit’s fortunes:Ĭharles Howard was a onetime bicycle repairman who introduced the automobile to the western United States and became an overnight millionaire. The chemistry between Breaker and Lia was absolutely amazing, but what she really loved was how well they understood and complemented each other. ![]() This book was the ultimate cooked perfection. Kind, supportive and always there when needed, he begins to realize that his feelings for Lia are more than friendship, but is it too late for her to realize what they might have? I loved his quiet determination and his dirty mouth. OMG Breaker Cane is EVERYTHING! He’s the best friend a girl could ask for. Not even her fiancé understands her and sees her as much as Breaker does. The only person in her life she really understands is her best friend, Breaker. Bold and energetic, she is not afraid to be herself. Lia was adorably awkward and the situations she found herself in made me laugh out loud as I read. I think the most important thing in The Lucky List was my inspiration for the character of Emily. The Lucky List showcases the evolution of friendships and relationships, especially the queer love story. But this is new in a whole new way: my first book that's truly my heart project. I did have the first two books, so I’ve done this before. I learned that I worked best off of an outline and making a detailed schedule leading up to the date of the revisions being due. I learned about the process a lot by working on the previous two books and I was able to meet my deadlines in a really healthy way. I think Five Feet Apart and All This Time really prepared me in a lot of ways to hit the ground running. ![]() This is your solo debut after several successful collaborations. ![]() |
